Infected With Spyware?

Signs That Your Computer May Be Infected With Spyware, Adware, Trojans, & Viruses
Signs That Your Computer May Be Infected With Spyware or Adware Viruses

How do you know if your machine has spyware??

There are several ways to check this, we'll go over them to give you the broadest view.

Do you:

Constantly receive pop-up ads randomly or while turning on the machine?

  • Some malicious software will bombard you with pop-up ads that aren't related to any particular Web site you're visiting. If you see pop-up ads as soon as you turn on your computer or when you're not even browsing the Web, you have spyware or other malicious software on your computer.
  • Is your computer taking longer to boot than you last remember?

  • Spyware and other unwanted software are not designed to be efficient or friendly to your PC's resources. The resources these programs use to track your activities and deliver advertisements can slow down your computer and errors in the software can make your computer crash. Although it may be a contributor, spyware may not be the only reason your PC is slowing down. Accomplish the short but imperitive tasks on this page before installing or removing any software that you think may help fix your pc.
  • Is your browser homepage different than what you set it to?

  • Some unwanted software has the ability to change your home page or search page settings. This means that the page that opens first when you start your Internet browser or the page that appears when you select "search" may be pages that you do not recognize. Even if you know how to adjust these settings, you may find that they revert back every time you restart your computer.
  • Are you noticing strange program icons appear on your desktop or in the bottom right taskbar?

  • Loopholes are found and exploited by malicious developers, programs can be installed on your machine that you never gave access or right to install. These programs are also made in such a manner that removing them is very hard if not nearly impossible.

These are all signs your machine is infected with some form of spyware, malware, adware, virus and possibly even a Trojan.

Manually Inspecting For Programs Running Without Authorization

There are two ways to check for programs running in the background.

  1. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del on your keyboard simultaneously will result in the Task Manager popping up. Alternatively you can also access the Task Manager by right clicking on the Task Bar at the bottom, then highlighting and clicking where it says "Start Task Manager". One of the tabs in the window that appears is the Processes. Clicking that tab shows all the current processes running. You can closely look at everything there and Google or post on our forums with any applications that you think might be suspect.
  2. Pressing the Windows Key and R on your keyboard simultaneously will result in the "Run" window popping up. Type in "cmd" and press enter or click "ok". This brings up a Command Window, a DOS utility used to manually execute commands to the operating system. In the Command Window if you were to type in "netstat –an" (no quotes) it will show you a list of systems you have connected to and systems connected to you. Another command that can be used in this instance would be "netstat –anbv", which outlines what process is communicating.
