Once you have downloaded Windows® Defender you are now ready to install it. If you clicked on "Run" instead of "Save" within the download prompt, the next screen will prompt you to "Run" or "Don't Run" the software downloaded. To proceed with the installation please click "Run"
The next window will prompt you with the Welcome screen for Windows® Defender. In this screen you will need to choose "Next" in order to be able to continue with the installation.
The next screen will prompt you to read and agree to the Windows® Defender License Agreement. In order to continue with the installation you must accept the License Agreement. Please choose the "I accept the terms in the license agreement" radial and click "Next" to proceed.
After accepting the License Agreement the following screen will prompt you to choose from the following options:
- Use Recommended Settings - Automatically install definition updates, get enhanced spyware protection, become a basic member of Microsoft Spynet. As a basic member, only information about the software and its actions you choose is reported to Microsoft Spynet. No personal information is sent.
- Install definition updates only - Automatically install definition updates, but do not join Microsoft Spynet at this time.
- Ask me later - Your computer might be more vulnerable to security threats, and problems could be harder to fix.
For this exercise we have chosen the "Install definition updates only" radial. We want to observe how well Microsoft Defender operates, not send information to Microsoft, yet. This option will enable us to automatically receive updates from Microsoft's Defender web site. This feature ensures we have the ability to scan for the latest threats out on the internet.
The next option is to choose the type of install you would like to perform, "Complete" or "Custom". We have chosen "Custom" for this exercise so we can evaluate what, if anything else is being installed. Please choose "Custom" and click "Next".
In this instance it is only installing Windows® Defender on your PC. There are no other options other than to change the default installation directory. We recommend you leave it as is, but may change it if you wish. This is only recommended for advanced and expert PC users who will later be able to troubleshoot accordingly is needed. Please click "Next" when you are ready to proceed with the installation.
The final screen is a "Ready" screen that advises you click "Install" to proceed with the installation, or if you want to review any of the options you checked off for you to simply click on "Back" instead. Please click on "Install" when you are ready to begin.
The following screen is what you should see as Windows® Defender installs.
The final screen informs you that the installation is complete and has a check placed on "Check for updated definitions and run a quick scan now". We recommend that you leave this option checked off and click on "Finish" to finish the installation.
Immediately after clicking on the "Finish" button, you may notice a small window on the bottom right hand corner of your PC display. The window simply displays that Windows® Defender is connecting to the internet to acquire new definitions and engine upgrades.
