Make sure you have no applications running in the background other than Internet Explorer so you can access the Internet.
There are 2 ways to download the program. Once you click on the Download Now link it will prompt you with and Active X box and you can choose to select "Open" it from its location or "Save" it to a folder. We recommend you to select “Open” so that way there are not any unnecessary files on your computer.
Once the program is downloaded the installation will automatically begin and prompt you with the introduction screen. Click on the “NEXT” button.
On the next prompt they are asking you review the license agreement and if you agree to it check off the
“I accept license agreement”. Once you have read and accepted the license agreement click next.
This prompt is telling you in what folders the program files will be stored. We recommend that you keep this to the default setting and click “NEXT”.
If you have Windows XP or Windows 2000 the following prompt will ask you if you want to restrict the program only to your account. Use your own discretion, but why not let everyone keep your computer Spyware free. Select the appropriate box and click “NEXT”.
You are now ready for the installation process to begin. Click on the “NEXT” button at this prompt and the installation process will begin.
Once the installation process has finished, the following box will appear on the screen. We recommend you leave all of the options checked off so it will follow the default procedure and automatically scan your system and update it when it is completed. The help file is also available at the end for your reading pleasure incase you have additional questions/concerns. Please click “FINISH” to continue the installation.
Once you click “Finish” it will immediately begin to scan for Spyware. This process will take time no matter how quick your computer is. Please allow the computer to sit idle until it is finished.
As Ad-Aware finds cookies and spyware on your computer it will notify you in red how many objects it has recognized as malicious or tracking.
Once it is complete, the following screen will appear and list in detail about each and every cookie or form of Spyware it has located in your system.
We recommend you review the list and check for any programs that you may frequently rely on. Those files that maybe in this list. 99.9% of the times every file on that list is a piece of Spyware or a tracking cookie. Besides if it is removed it is quarantined so you can retrieve them later if needed. To remove; Right-click in the area and click on “Select All Objects”. Once you have done that you will notice that all the objects have a check mark next to them. Then click “NEXT” on the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.
It will prompt you for a filename of the removed items that way you can retrieve them at a later time if you need to. We recommend you use dates for file names. That way every time that you run Ad-Aware and you notice a problem the next day you will know to check there first. The section to restore items from Ad-Aware SE will be available on our HTML Forums under the section Ad-Aware Support and Updates Section. Chose the file name and hit “OK”, once that is done it will ask you if you would like all the objects quarantined, click “OK”.
The next screen will show your selection being deleted and quarantined.
Once the deleting and quarantining is complete Ad-Aware will go into update, please not this only happens after initial installation. If you want to update any time afterwards you have to manually click the “Check for updates now” link when you first open Ad-Aware on the bottom right hand corner of the screen.
Once complete it will bring you back to the initial start screen.
