Getting Started with Zone Alarm

Upon rebooting your computer you will have the following window appear to give you the option to "Play a video tutorial" or click "FINISH". Since we will be highlighting all the different facets of Zone Alarm here you can click finish.

Once you have clicked "FINISH" the program will start and the following window will appear on your computer. Notice the extra window on the bottom right hand corner of the screen. We will highlight this very shortly. The main Zone Alarm control center is right before you. While it may seen complex, it takes a very short while to become familiar and proficient within the system.

The window that you saw appear on the bottom right hand corner was a "Security Alert" that Zone Alarm is making you aware of. Within this security window you notice that Zone Alarm is warning you of a program trying to reach the internet. In this instance that we highlight the program is Gmail. Since the Gmail notifier is a "Trusted" application we can check off "Remember this setting" so that it will not prompt you for this program again. Once that is accomplished you can click on "ALLOW" to let allow the program access to the internet.

Notice within the window that Zone Alarm breaks down the program and explains several items. The items are shown and highlighted below.

Security Alert Simplified

  • Identification : States whether the program attempting internet access is recognized by Zone Labs program list.
  • Application : Notifies you of the application (program) attempting to gain internet access. In this instance it is "gnotify.exe"
  • Destination IP : Notifies you of the IP address that it is trying to access and the port that is going through.
  • More Info : Provides you with more information about the program.

While your PC first boots you may experience a few of those windows popping up to ask for internet access to several programs that frequently check. We recommend that you look to make sure no unknown programs are trying to access the internet. Use the "MORE INFO" tab if you are unsure of a program attempting to access the internet. For each individual tab for Zone Alarm we will have a small dedicated page thoroughly explaining each function.
